Frequently Asked Questions

What is Placenta Encapsulation?

  • Placenta Encapsulation is a process in which the placenta, a temporary organ developed during pregnancy, is carefully prepared, dehydrated, and ground into a fine powder. This powder is then placed into capsules, making it convenient for postpartum mothers to consume.

Is Placenta Encapsulation Safe?

  • Yes, especially when done by a trained and Certified Placenta Encapsulator such as myself. I follow strict hygiene and sanitization protocols to ensure the safety and well-being of my clients.

How is the Placenta Prepared for Encapsulation?

  • We follow a thorough, step-by-step process involving cleaning, dehydrating, and encapsulating the placenta into easy-to-consume capsules. Once you contact us for services, we will arrange to collect your placenta after childbirth.

  • Raw Method: The placenta is cleaned, observed for any possible abnormalities, dehydrated, and then encapsulated for your consumption. This method retains the full amount of nutrients and volume of the placenta.

  • Steamed Method: The placenta is cleaned, observed for any possible abnormalities, steamed with natural ingredients, dehydrated, and then encapsulated. This method is inspired by and loosely follows what is known as the “Traditional Chinese Method”, based on the belief that giving birth leaves an opening in the body that is cold and with steaming the placenta prior to dehydration warmth is added back to the body. This method does result in a loss of nutrients and approximately 1/3 of the placenta’s volume leading to possible fewer benefits and capsules.

What are the Potential Benefits of Placenta Encapsulation?

  • The potential benefits include but are not limited to, a possible increase in energy levels, a decreased chance of experiencing postpartum depression or baby blues, assistance in balancing hormones, and support with lactation. Please note that individual experiences can vary.

Are There Any Contraindications for Placenta Encapsulation?

  • Placenta encapsulation is not recommended for individuals with infectious diseases including any form of Hepatitis or HIV. Also if the mother or baby has an active infection during labor or within 24 hours of delivery. It’s essential to inform us of any medical conditions or concerns you may have before proceeding with the service.

What if I Am GBS+? What if Meconium is Present?

  • If you are Group B Streptococcus positive (GBS+), we can still proceed with the encapsulation process. Testing positive for GBS means that the bacteria are currently present in the vaginal or rectal mucus; this is not an infection and is considered normal. Since our encapsulation process is done using food-safe methods, it is perfectly safe to encapsulate if GBS positive.

  • Meconium presence in the amniotic fluid does not typically impact the encapsulation process. We are experienced in handling various placental conditions, and the encapsulation procedure will still be conducted with utmost care and cleanliness.

When is the Best Time to Have My Placenta Encapsulated?

  • It is ideal to contact us before your due date to make arrangements for the encapsulation process. Once you’re in labor you or another designated family member will reach out to let us know. After childbirth, we’ll promptly collect the placenta and begin the process.

What is the Cost of Placenta Encapsulation?

  • Our available packages range from $300-$400. We also have individual add-on items available if you perhaps don’t want the pills but instead just a placenta print. Specific pricing info can be found here

Can I Encapsulate After a C-Section?

  • Yes, you can still encapsulate your placenta after a c-section. The process remains the same as well as the potential benefits.

How Many Capsules Will I Receive From My Placenta?

  • The number of capsules produced can vary based on the size of the placenta and also your desired preparation method. On average, mothers have received around 100-200 capsules.

How Should I Store the Placenta Capsules?

  • Once encapsulated, the placenta capsules should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and any moisture

  • After 6 weeks it is okay to store the capsules in the freezer. They must remain in their original container, placed in a double-lined Ziploc bag, and placed in the back of the freezer.

What is a Placenta Tincture?

  • A Placenta Tincture is another way to preserve the beneficial properties of the placenta. It involves steeping a small piece of placenta in 100% high-proof alcohol for at least 6 weeks.

  • The resulting tincture can be used for postpartum support and hormonal balance long after the capsules are finished. Please note that this item is not recommended for those avoiding alcohol consumption.

What is a Placenta Salve?

  • A Placenta Salve is a topical product made from the placenta, often combined with other natural ingredients such as herbs and oils. It can be used externally to soothe and promote healing for cesarean scars, perineal tears, or any other areas that may benefit from postpartum care.
